Calico (Odessa/Doran) (it will take a bit for all the thumbnails to load below)

A few of us decided to go out and run around the Calico area, and run Odessa and Doran trails again, and do a bit of trail scouting. What started out as a 3 vehicle casual run soon grew to almost 8,  and ended up being a run that the entire newly elected board for the Trail Crew club was on.. A first I believe..

The day started out rainy, but cleared up before Calico - not a drop all day long. After meeting up at the now out of business Jenny Rose, we grabbed a quick bit at Peggy Sues, and then headed to the trails. Dave, the new Trail Crew Prez, rode with me for the trip since his rig was unavailable.  After airing down, Me, Bill, and Chris spent the first hour or so playing on the very difficult falls on Doran. After much tire spinning, scraping, hopping around, and playing teeter-totter on sliders with our trucks, the group headed over to the odessa trail. Since the last time I ran the trail, the lower half has become much more washed out, and added to the difficulty. Last year we got a stock Tacoma through it with no body damage, I don't believe it can be done now. For the next couple of hours, we worked the group up the narrow and very rock Oddessa canyon. My Tacoma's long wheel base cost me a small dent in my front fender, and Craig lost his side mirror at the same spot.. But in all in was a very fun and challenging trail. We stopped for lunch at the top. After a minor falling accident in one of the mines, the group decided to head down for the day, and we all played a bit on the dry lake bed.. Most of the group headed home since it was cold and getting late, but me and  Jon decide to do some scouting behind the Calico hills to see if we could find a new trail, and Dave stayed on for the trip. We did find allot of old mines, a stone house, a some nice drop off cliffs, but no new trails. In our wanderings, we ended up back at Bismark, and decided to take Doran down, even though it was now dark. Doran was fun, but had been "paved" allot more than before, and was about the same challenge as Odessa was. We took the bypass this time for the falls, opting not to try them in the dark.. and headed back home..
